As networks, teams can be categorized by their mix of link types. Structural links provide the interlocking set of vertical whole/part relationships while the input-output links of workflow provide the horizontal processes.
Teams formed of employees only represent the hierarchy and its embedded workflows. This traditional hierarchy that does “everything under one roof” is fixed and static. It has been forced at an accelerating pace to create more flexible structures and workflows. This has been done to a limited extent with matrix reports, but more dramatically by the increase in specialized teams. These teams fill in the gaps and expand the capability of the core management hierarchy to produce successful results in a rapidly changing environment.
Each link type carries two general roles reflecting the in-or-out direction on each node. Teams are characterized by link types, from simple management teams to complex mixes of team structures and processes.
