One Link, Two Roles

A person-in-position plays many roles in an organization. Those reflecting a persisting relationship can be represented as a link with a direction coming in or going out.

Each link indicates two roles, one for each node in the pair that defines a link. These roles are complementary in the From-To relationship of a directed link:

  • A From role (link going out) is one of leadership (structure) or workflow supplier (process)
  • A To role (link coming in) is one of membership (structure) or workflow customer (process)

Each work link a position has represents (a) another role for the person in that position and (b) a relationship with a role-playing person in another position.

A team is a network of roles. Roles are inherently interdependent, created and sustained by teams. Each linked role indicates a team, starting with the direct reporting link that gives a position a home team in the organization hierarchy.
Each position node has an Title Role reflecting the current job and its “paycheck” reporting link.

Structure Links
Whole/Part Relationships

Structure is generated through leadership/ followership relationships and behaviors. These two types of whole/part links enables us to distinguish the formal reporting relationships (A) from all other team memberships (C).

Process Links
Input-Output Relationships
Process flows through input-output connections and supplier-customer interdependencies. Primary process flows (B) may be distinguished from the myriad secondary processes and information flows (D) that are necessary to support the primary processes.
